What it is

The Moon's last word in a sign

The Moon moves through a sign in about two and a half days. On its way it makes aspects to the other planets: conjunctions, sextiles, squares, trines, oppositions, the five the classical astrologers counted. After its last exact aspect in the sign, and until it enters the next sign, the Moon is said to be void of course. It has nothing left to do where it is.

The old reading is blunt. William Lilly, in 1647, following the medieval election manuals: a matter begun with the Moon void of course "seldom comes to good". Nothing started then grows. The same rule appears in Sahl ibn Bishr eight centuries earlier. Rhythm's timing engine gives it the heaviest negative weight of any rule, for every action but one.

What not to start

  • Contracts and agreements. The thing drifts or comes back for renegotiation.
  • Launches and announcements. They go unnoticed.
  • Purchases that matter. The thing disappoints.
  • Journeys. The classical warning was for setting sail; it holds for setting out.
  • Anything you want to last: the first day of a project, a habit, a hire.

What it is good for

Rest, finishing, and clearing the desk, the inbox and the backlog. Routine work goes fine, because it has no beginning in it, and so does the conversation you would rather have no consequences. The void Moon is the one condition of the sky the window checker counts in favour of resting, and the rest is free: nothing is lost by stopping, because nothing started would have come to much.

How it is computed

Why void Moon calendars disagree

Three choices decide the times, and calendars make them differently. Which planets count: Rhythm uses the seven classical bodies, the Sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn, with the Moon, and not the outer planets, which the classical rule did not know. Which aspects count: the five major ones, and no minor aspects. And the time zone, which this page names on every line.

A calendar that counts the outer planets will show shorter void windows, because Uranus, Neptune and Pluto give the Moon more last words. Neither is wrong; they are different frames. Rhythm keeps the classical one because that is where the rule comes from.

The Moon's position is computed at thirty-minute resolution and each sign change is then found to the minute. The windows are recomputed every hour.
